The distinction is not subtle. The valid corrections introduce new facts. The invalid corrections introduce falsehoods. The reasoner must discriminate between the two.

Interpretation. The worked example demonstrates how the belief revision trajectory encodes the quality of the correction filter. The same model, starting from the same baseline, produces two different trajectories depending on the correction type. The ratio of their magnitudes (|\Delta_{\text{invalid}}| / |\Delta_{\text{valid}}|) directly measures the filter leakage. The direction of the trajectories (both move toward reduced harm) confirms that the invalid correction produces a revision in the same direction as the valid one — the model is not revising differently in response to invalid corrections, it is revising less but in the same direction. The failure is quantitative (too much revision on invalid input) rather than qualitative (revision in the wrong direction).

8.11 The Sycophancy Gradient and Alignment

The sycophancy gradient — 0% to 56% wrong-correction acceptance across four models — has direct implications for alignment.

The gradient is monotonic. Within the tested models, sycophancy increases with model generation for the Gemini family: Flash 2.0 (33%) \to Pro (44%) \to Flash 2.5 (56%). The wide confidence intervals (Wilson 95% CIs are 12–65%, 19–73%, and 27–81% respectively, with n = 9 per model) caution against over-interpreting any single point estimate. But the monotonic ordering across four models is more robust than any individual cell: the probability of observing this ordering by chance under a null of equal sycophancy rates is 1/4! \approx 4\%.

This gradient is concerning because it suggests that the training procedures producing more capable models (higher correct-flip rates) may also be producing more sycophantic models (higher wrong-flip rates). Capability and sycophancy may be entangled, at least for the Gemini training methodology.

Claude’s zero sycophancy demonstrates that the entanglement is not necessary. It is possible to train a model that accepts valid corrections (59% correct-flip rate — not the highest, but substantial) while rejecting all invalid corrections (0% wrong-flip rate). The Claude result proves that the correction filter can be implemented effectively, at least for the specific correction types tested here.

But Claude’s correction filter comes with costs. Claude’s 59% correct-flip rate is the lowest of the four models. Claude is the most conservative reviser: it accepts fewer valid corrections than any Gemini model. This conservatism may be the mechanism by which Claude achieves zero sycophancy — it applies a high threshold for revision, which screens out both invalid and (some) valid corrections. The cost of perfect discrimination is reduced sensitivity to genuine evidence.

In geometric terms, Claude’s correction filter is tight: it admits only corrections with high evidential force into the valid subspace. This tight filter rejects all invalid corrections (which have low evidential force, since they are fabricated) but also rejects some valid corrections (which have genuine evidential force but fall below the filter’s high threshold). The Gemini models have loose filters: they admit most corrections into the valid subspace, accepting more valid corrections (higher correct-flip rates) but also accepting more invalid corrections (higher wrong-flip rates).

The optimal filter setting depends on the deployment context. In high-stakes contexts (medical diagnosis, legal judgment), a tight filter like Claude’s is preferable: the cost of accepting a false correction (potentially dangerous) outweighs the cost of rejecting a true correction (potentially conservative). In low-stakes contexts (informal conversation, creative brainstorming), a looser filter may be acceptable: the cost of being influenced by an invalid suggestion is lower than the cost of being unresponsive to valid input.

This context-dependent optimality is another geometric property that scalar evaluations cannot capture. The question is not “how sycophantic is this model?” but “what is the model’s filter setting, and is that setting appropriate for the intended use case?”

8.12 Implications for Cognitive Science

The Learning benchmark results connect to a central debate in cognitive science: the relationship between belief revision and social influence.

Human belief revision is known to be sensitive to social pressure. Asch’s (1956) conformity experiments demonstrated that people will deny the evidence of their own eyes when the social group disagrees. Milgram’s (1963) obedience experiments showed that social authority can override personal moral judgment. The sycophancy observed in LLMs is an artificial analogue of these human phenomena: the model changes its assessment not because the evidence warrants it but because a social signal (the correction) applies pressure.

The geometric framework provides a unified language for discussing human and artificial sycophancy. In both cases, the failure is in the correction filter: the system does not adequately discriminate between evidence-based corrections (which should produce revision) and pressure-based corrections (which should not). The filter’s leakage rate corresponds to the Asch conformity rate (approximately 37% of human subjects conformed to the incorrect majority in Asch’s experiments — strikingly close to the 33% wrong-flip rate of Flash 2.0).

The L4 graded revision result also has a human analogue. Humans show proportional belief revision under Bayesian updating when the evidence is unambiguous and the social context is neutral (Edwards, 1968). The belief revision mechanism is functional in both humans and LLMs. The failure, in both cases, is specifically in the social filter: the mechanism that determines whether an incoming signal should be treated as evidence or as social pressure.

This parallel suggests that the geometric framework may provide a common mathematical language for studying belief revision across biological and artificial cognitive systems, with the correction filter as the key variable that distinguishes adaptive from maladaptive revision.
