Numbing: \beta_k deflates. The clinician processes the boundary crossing by reducing the perceived cost of the boundary. The clinician stops feeling the cost — not because they have integrated it but because they have suppressed it.
The test: present the clinician with a boundary case identical to ones they have crossed repeatedly. A resilient clinician will still report moral distress (appropriate \beta_k). A numbed clinician will not (deflated \beta_k). The resilient clinician’s distress is not weakness — it is the correct output of a well-calibrated heuristic function.
Building Moral Resilience: What the Framework Prescribes

Train the committee in manifold-aware triage (Chapter 10). Ensure that treating clinicians do not make triage decisions for their own patients.
